The Hieroglyphic Stairway, Dzibanche. Only outlines of carving can still be made out on most of the steps of this hieroglyphic stairway at Dzibanche. Here we see a captive to the right, facing a column of glyphs on the left. Better preserved steps (currently not on display at the site, but see below) indicated that these steps were carved to commemorate a series of captures in the late 5th century by the Snake King, Yuknoom Ch'een I (photo and caption: Stanley Guenter).
