The Castillo at Muyil rises 17 meters, its basal pyramid being formed of four superimposed platforms, and exhibits at least two different construction episodes. While the lower stairs are restored, those reaching the upper levels are not, making an ascent to the top rather dangerous. The Castillo is crowned by a large, circular platform, an unusual feature. Carbon 14 dating of the temple's wooden lintels suggests a construction date in the 11th century AD (photo and caption: Stanley Guenter). |
